Executive Chairman of Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ:SBUX), Mr. Howard Schultz while speaking at the Atlantic Council in Washington, D.C., said visitors to its showrooms and shops are now free to use the toilets.
With this decision, the customers can freely use the toilets at Starbucks without any need to make the purchase. According to Mr. Schultz, it is not a public bathroom, but visitors can freely use them. It is committed to providing the visitors the utmost convenience.
The decision is on the backdrop of the arrest of a two black men, who were the business partners and using the restroom of Starbucks in Philadelphia without making any purchase, were taken into custody on April 12, 2018. The store manager told them to leave and informed the police and it was bad decision according to Mr. Schultz.
It has caused a huge furor on social media. A lot of people staged a protest both inside and outside the Starbucks in Philadelphia for the racial abuse.
Mr. Schultz said he and the management are responsible for such terrible decision of the store manager. She made a wrong decision but it was the company’s decision. According to the existing rule of the company, only the customers, who makes a purchase at Starbucks, are only allowed to use the bathroom. The store managers need to implement the company’s set rules but they can allow them at their own discretion.
