5 things regular people are total snobs about

It isn’t just the uber-rich who can be snotty.

The share of total U.S. income held by upper income households — defined as those earning $145,000 a year or more for a family of four — has jumped from 29% in 1970 to 49% in 2014, according to data from the Pew Research Center released in December 2015. Furthermore, over the past 30 years, the wealth (defined as assets minus debts owed) of upper-income families has doubled to more than $650,000.

While it’s often only these uber-rich people who can afford to own (and be snobby about) things like $2,000 designer handbags and cars with six-figure price tags, even those with little money can be snobby about some things, as shown by a new thread on Reddit. The thread asked people, “What are you a snob about?” and had garnered more than 18,000 comments as of Friday morning. Many of the things people said they were snobs about were regular goods that cost less than $20 — in other words, things millions of people in America can afford.

Here are five of those things; these have been edited for clarity and length.

1. Socks

“Some people will just slap anything on their feet. Savages. I cannot have a paper thin sock. But if it’s a thick sock, the seam across the toes can’t be too thick. The band of the sock can’t be tight enough that I feel it squeeze. But it can’t be loose enough to ride down.

2. Pens

“I need a pen of a certain quality or better, and I get the feeling as my income increases that standard will only increase…”

And another commenter wrote in this same thread: “I feel like we should start a refuge for those of us who appreciate high quality writing implements. The lowliest, free pen you’d find at a bank or at a checkout would be a G2 Pilot, and ink would flow like rivers and it would be called Pen Island.”

3. Maple syrup

“It doesn’t have to be top-of-the-line or anything, but it better be real, 100% maple syrup. None of that…brown corn syrup for my pancakes/waffles/french toast. I know it’s more expensive, but it’s totally worth it.”

4. Black pepper

“You have to have a pepper mill. The pre-ground stuff is just dust.” (Another commenter followed that with this question: “What kind of savage uses pre-ground pepper?”)

5. Toilet paper

“Only the good stuff is going near this butt.”
