It was announced by M1(SGX:B2F)that they were working in a partnership with Nokia Corp (ADR) (NYSE:NOK). The main reason behind this partnership was the development and testing of narrowband IoT (internet of things), as well as a new 5G network.

Through the live demonstration, it was revealed that the NB-IoT network involved the use of room temperature and humidity sensor remote application. The primary role for this application was to obtain the data and share the discoveries. This test was performed in the M1 labs.

The other side of the trial, testing the 5G network, revealed a latency of 1 m/s. This test was performed between three separate ‘robots’.

How this partnership will benefit the integration of the technology through various regions

Both companies have announced the intention to deploy an NB-IoT network throughout 2017. To start, it was disclosed that the companies would first be rolling out the networks in Singapore. With regards to NB-IoT networks, various communication giants have been working in cohesion, to develop a sustainable and efficient network for public use.

In addition to this network, Nokia and M1 also announced the official launch of their take on a nationwide network. The companies refer to this network as heterogeneous Network, HetNet for short.

HetNet enables users to switch between various types of networks, without the fear of being disconnected. The companies have managed to achieve this through, making use of Nokia’s Flexi-zone Wi-Fi equipment. As well as small cells.

M1 revealed that the company had been running extensive tests on HetNet, this testing began almost a year prior to the announcement that the product is officially available. Furthermore, M1 disclosed that they would be investing up to SG$50 million into both HetNet, and NB-IoT network.

Competition that Nokia And M1 face for their network

M1 is facing a heap of competition in regards to its networks, including past competition from its current partner. Prior to the partnership between M1 and Nokia, Nokia had been working with Korean telco KT, and successfully demonstrated 4G NB-IoT network access. This took place in August.

Other companies that pose as rivals for the release of 5G NB-IoT network, include the current partnership between Singtel, and Erricson.
